GTA IV PC Crashing while using wireless controller

So when I start my Steam version of GTA4 while using my wireless 360 controller, I start to run around/drive around and after about 1-2 minutes, it crashes to the desktop. I can't find ANYTHING on google about this problem. I'm POSITIVE it's the controller because as soon as I set it down and start using the keyboard and mouse, it doesn't crash. but then I touch one button on the controller and BOOM, back to the desktop. I've uninstalled the game and reinstalled, didn't work. I also made sure I have the latest MS drivers for the controller. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!
