Hello,

I have a problem with my GTA IV, it is almost unplayable on my laptop ASUS N53SV.
Have tried various settings but there is no real difference, I realized that I lose frames when I'm near the water in the game! (Losing between 10-15 frames when I'm near water)
This is getting on my nerves, have not been able to play the game ever since I bought the laptop, bought it specifically because it would manage to play this game.
Another fun thing, if I plug in my external 22 "display with a resolution of 1680 & 1050 then I lose about (3-5) frames when I play in the resolution.

Avrage FPS during gaming is between (30-15)

Ingame settings:

Video Mode: 1366 & 768
Texture Quality: High
Shadow Quality: High
Reflection Resolution: High
Water Quality: High
Texture filter Quality: Anisotropic x4
Night Shadows: Off
View Distance: 25
Detail Distance: 31
Vehicle Density: 33

Specifications:

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
System Manufacturer: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
System Model: N53SV
Processor: Intel ® Core ™ i5-2410M CPU@2.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~ 2.3GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GT540M
Display Memory: 1023MB (DDR3)

That's quite expected from that GPU, High settings is too much. Medium settings is best I guess.

I concur actually, I run on High everything except Anisotropic which is 2x. View is like 20, Detail of 40, Vehicle of 35
Averages 20-30

My specs:

TOSHIBA Satellite P755

Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.0GHz
6GB Ram
GT540M 1GB

And the odd thing is that if I switch to medium, it lags horribly.

If its 1.0.7 patch, Shadow quality on high makes the game laggy mostly. Framerate should be fine if you turn them off. Also VisualIV and treesIV mods improve performance quite abit, worth to try them out.

I got very same laptop model, with same vga, but i7 cpu. Running game on 30+ fps all the time without shadows, rest on high and view distance on 40. On 1.0.4 patch runs fine with shadows on high as well, except on evening time.

Turning texture quality to medium only decrease performance for some reason.

How about change your graphics to Nvidia instead of Integrated Graphics (Intel) monocle.gif

Right Click on desktop > Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Click on Program Settings tab > Search for GTA IV executable > Change the presets from Integrated Graphics to Maximum Performance Processor sarcasm.gif

Did you already do that ?

I know that my laptop is not made for high graphics gaming, and i'm not saying that i try to play all games at highest.
The thing is, I've been trying to get GTA IV/EFLC to run for sometime without success and it's really getting on my nerves.

Hehe, I've already change my Nvidia settings (Learned that trick long time ago) to Maximum Performance Processor.

I've also tried to change my graphics, and the gain is almost imperceptible! (Like 2-5 frames differences)
If i change my shadows to off then i get smooth and stable frame rate, but the game looks hideous without'em.

One other thing to straight out, my frame rates are good as long i'm not near water, it then it drops down.

My Geforce GT540M has 1GB memory.

I know what specs my computer have, I know that it has a dual core with Hyper-Threading.

I know what is in the computer, and how it should scale in games and other applications.
I'm not new in the computer world, have some experience. So when it comes to hardware, you don't have to go on about it.

My problem is that I get nothing on lowering my settings, the only thing that makes a big difference is to turn off shadows completely. But as I said before, the game looks horribly out shadows, almost like a game from the early 2000's.

The game runs on he settings I have, as long as I'm not near the water in the game, I am close to an area with water my frame rate drops from 35-30 to 15-17 frames.

That's the problem, have tried to lower my shadows when I'm near water and then there is a difference, but only with maybe 2-5 frames, until I switch them off, then my frame rate becomes good again.
