Saw this awhile back, but never posted it here.

Article

This kinda pisses me off. Dodge took what was once a proud American car with a V8 is being "resurrected" in the form of a tiny European compact with a lawnmower engine.

Was that the worst ugliest example of the old dart you could find? One specced like that is almost guaranteed to have a slant 6. At least throw one of the nicer high power V8 ones up there.

AH, I didn't know about the differences, and I just google'd Dodge Dart. Those pictures are gorgeous though

Googling for Plymouth Valiant I came up with this Australian version I'd never heard of, kind of cool...

And of course how could we forget Duel 1971...

The dart was a nice solid car slant 6 or 318 in it.

The 6 cylinder ones were like the dodge neons of the 60's and 70's. Truly sh*t poverty spec cars. The 318's weren't all that special either.

On the other hand you had the good engined ones would have been like the SRT-4 of their time. Dart GTS's with 340's and 383's. Then there were some super rare factory 440's and Hemi out there made for drag racing homologation (68 440's and 80 Hemis). And then Swinger 340's and Demon 340's as the last hot engine before the big power drop. Even after the compression drop, the Sport 360 was a pretty mean car for its time.

I loved the movie Duel. A classic!

Okay, I love this new DODGE DART car. A great successor to the Neon, but I think a different name would have been good. Can't wait for the full reveal on January 9, 2012! I want to see this car in an SRT package, might beat the Neon!

Maybe a good name would have been the Stealth, but overall, the new DART, and the reviving of the name, has been a success for Dodge. People are talking about it, and first impressions have been very positive. I hope it becomes a successful car for Dodge and company.

Our family has a 'tiny european compact' with the same lawnmower engine that this dodge dart's getting. It's a Fiat 500 Abarth. monocle.gif

The design of this is ugly as sin though, it's like an sialfadodgeGTCrocco mashup thing. Dodge is only reviving the Dart name in order to get more publicity, if they called it the new Neon or whatever the car wouldn't get half as much coverage.

Wow, that is sad. I loved the old Dart and Valiant. Nothing beats that ultra cool concave back windshield.

I grew up during muscle car times, in a muscle car town. Oddly enough the only Darts I knew weren't muscled out.

Lurch, that first pic is nice. I would ditch the hood though.

What, the factory Swinger 340 hood? It's actually functional ya know?

I dig that it is functional and all. I'm just going gay with design look I guess. It's just personal preference ya know, but I think it would look better all smooth with those slightly sloped up sides of the front panels.

A full front-on shot courtesy of Allpar. The headlight assembly is still missing.

It's not that bad, better looking then a Corrolla or Civic. Plus isn't there a rumor going around that it has a AWD option?

Don't... don't... don't sit on the hood. That hood will dent. I told the kids not to get on the hood! Just see if you can bounce it loose, and I'll... ah... just bounce it loose.

It's an opinion shared by the majority of people. As for the new Dart, call me crazy but I'm rather fond of what little we've seen of the design so far, excluding the interior; it seems like Dodge is going back to their "plastic everywhere" routine. I do wish they had picked a different name, though.

What name would you have picked? Neon would have been fine, but some people found the car to be sh*t, plus it is a pretty recent name. Omni could have worked too, but it was a hatchback, while this is a sedan. Dodge seems to be resurrecting old names, and putting them on cars that would have been logical evolutions of them. The Dart was a compact back in the 60s and 70s, if it were still being built, it would most likely have adopted a front wheel drive platform if it stayed in production. The Charger would have added another set of doors, since large coupes don't sell as much as 4 door sedans.

Plus chances are the avenger replacement will adopt an older name as well. I can see it being named the Monaco or Coronet
