| How was this show even let on air? Was it harmful or helpful? Certain words and actions were used on this show that certainly would not be tolerated on television today... |
I say the show was helpful.
I grew up watching it when it was on prime time TV. The years it was on were the years I like to think of as the sweet spot after the initial civil rights movement. The show wasn't designed to have you side with Archie; It was designed so that you could see what a clueless, bigoted fool he was. It really pointed out how foolish being racially biased is.
The show was edgy to say the least. There were cross burning episodes, sexual attack episodes, abortion episodes...and if I remember correctly it was the first show to ever be so daring as to have the sound of a flushing toilet(apparently that was a big censorship issue at the time)
Not to mention it spun off The Jeffersons - The first prime time show that featured successful black people as the main characters.
*side note: One of my all time best childhood dogs was named ,Archie, after the show
