I Have never modded before and everything that I found that "helps" explain how to do it kinda makes me feel like Im missing a step cause Ill do what it says, start the game and then BAM no mods have worked and the game runs fine. Please can someone give me a step by step (for idiots) guide to modding. I love the game but want to have more fun and cant. Thanks for the help.

Try to patch the filelist.pak file. Itīs located in pc/data/ folder. Otherwise the game will refuse any mod attempt no matter what you change, itīll be default.

Once the game is installed and patched with official patch, make a backup of the original filelist.pak and insert this one: http://www.mediafire.com/?w4lj54pqxiocia6

Thatīs all, from this point mods should be effective. I used this method many times, always worked BUT Iīm using a retail version of the game. May not work for Steam stuff. I donīt know.

Besides this remove the read-only attribute from all GTA IV folders and files and start the game only as admin.

Op i recently started modding and have the steam version. I would recommend downgrading the patch to 1.0.4.0, your currently on 1.0.7.0 as most mods only support 1.4.

The files you need to make your game moddable are a modified filelist.pak, a asi loader (i use xliveless) and a scripthook.dll and a scripthookdotnet file. With these you dont need anything else to make mods work.

So just go into the gta4 files in steam and add all those into it? then how do i do idividual cars or a car pack?

a asi loader (i use xliveless) and a scripthook.dll and a scripthookdotnet file.

These are only needed if you want to run scripts.

For help with car modding you may take a look into the Tutorial section of the forum: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showforum=109

So I just download filelist.pak and save it in PC/OS(C:)/ProgramFiles(x86)/steam/steamapps/common/grandtheftautoiv/GTAIV ... then do the same with the car pack or player model and the mods will run on start up? Where are good safe places to get the patch, the filelist, and car pack?

I donīt know if this method works with Steam games but I suppose no differents in the game architecture to a retail version.

The filelist.pak needs to go in pc/data if i remember correctly. As naidraida says you only need a asi loader and scripthook if the mod requires it, but if you add them now you wont need anything else later on. A good place for mods is gta4-mods.com

Use this guide to downgrade http://www.gtagaming.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2198415 i did and it works fine. The only thing is that you have to launch it out of steam thereafter with Launchgtaiv.exe to stop steam trying to auto update it.
