So im trying to rebuild my PC and i have a few things in mind already and my budget is around $750 and im just trying to find out if a few things are compatible with an Inspiron 531. I already have:

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 2.80 GHz

RAM 3.0 GB

Windows Vista 32-bit OS

Geforce 9500 GT

And im wondering if anything below is compatible with an Inspiron 531.

Geforce GTX 580

Windows 7 64-bit OS (I know its compatible)

G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8 GB RAM

AMD FX-4170 Zambezi 4.2 GHz

If you guys have any suggestions or anything to add. Help would be appreciated also wondering if I should get a bigger power supply and i dont know what it is already because I dont feel like digging through my CPU.

Please post the exact model of your motherboard and power supply.

Right off the bat I can tell you that FX-4170 is a very weak CPU for gaming, and it's definitely not fast enough for GTX580 (which has pretty terrible price/performance ratio, unless you get it second-hand) to be fully utilised.

You'll need a new motherboard to take advantage of a new CPU, RAM, and video card. 300w PSU is on the low end for a mid-tier system and if your PSU is old it should be replaced anyway. But don't worry! You can keep your keyboard and mouse and maybe monitor. Oh unless it's PS/2.

For $750 you can buy a really decent PC sans monitor. And go with an Intel CPU, their i-series blows the competition out of the water currently.

You are looking at replacing the whole PC.
I would just save a couple hundred more and build a good gaming PC for 900 I think you could manage it comfortably.

Requisite 550w-600w power. Even 700w PSU is purvey very high performance.

Hey guys, I think I might get upgrade to a GTX 480 soon, but what Power Supply should I get? Because I don't think this 300 watt PSU would work with this card. And if you find a good one send me a link to it.

Thanks!

I think a 500W would be suitable, still it mainly depends on your budget.

I would still start from scratch, the only thing you're keeping is your motherboard, it's only an extra 100 bucks to get a brand new motherboard as well.

I got this machine for $850:

Intel Core i5 3570K @ 4.4 Ghz
Corsair H60
8GB Kingston HyperX RAM
AMD Radeon HD 7850
CoolerMaster HAF 912 Case
ASRock Z77 Pro3
Corsair TX650V2

A system like this would be much more well balanced than a 580 + 4170. Something like a FX 8120 instead of an i5 would probably bring the price down to around $780, so that is a possibility to consider. Also, GTX 480s already have heat issues. You aren't helping it but putting it in a oven case like a Inspiron 531.

I would suggest at least a 600 watt PSU depending on how much you want to expand in the near or distant future. The top-of-the-line graphics cards of tomorrow will likely demand higher wattage PSUs. Seeing how you already have a GTX 580 (a higher end card then the 560), I don't have that much more to say, especially considering the 4.2 GHz processor.

I know a lot about this kind of stuff, but I don't know too much about model numbers.

Dell computer cases are restricted from the start as the Inspiron 531 is for those who does basic task and nothing intensive.
Because of that, it's unlikely people will go and buy themselves a high-end card, that cost almost the same as the entire machine itself.
If they do add a graphic card, then it's mostly a low-end to mid-range like the one you currently have which will fit. There is a very slim chance a GTX 580 may fit as
Dell reserves long cards for the XPS line up.
Chance your case but if you can't, you probably might get away with a GTX660
