With all the installments in this current GTA era, they all seem to be set in the present day. Not that I've got anything wrong with the present day, but it seems eventually it will run out of steam they continue to do so in each game.

Do you think we'll ever see a GTA set in the past again, and if you do when & where should it be set?

I actually hope not!

But even if it is set in the 1930s, 50s, 70s, 80s or whatever, it would still be cool, but I prefer present day GTAs.

I think R* will make a GTA game that sets in the past. I wonder how it will work out though.

Maybe but only if it was a prequel. They wouldn't make a 20th Century game if it wasn't a prequel in my opinion

I'm watching the film Pubic Enemies starting Johnnycake Deposit and I can see Rockstar mastering te 1930s. Also, if they set it in the Great Depression then there would be a plausible reason for all of the crime! I hope they do! Wait... They should do this with with a NEW IP, NOT GRAND THEFT AUTO.

Whatt do you mean by the past? I have nothing against GTA plaing in the begining of this century ore even in the 90s of the last century, but not 80s, 70s ore even earlier.

Wow I didn't think there would be such a negative thought to a GTA game in the past.

@ everyone asking, I define past as 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's. I don't think it could work in the 60's (maybe as a strech the late 60's) or prior.

Late 60s Frisco could work, with hippies and black panthers as peds. The cars would suck though.

Tbh, I would also prefer that GTA continue to focus on the themes and culture of the present day. The world is more relatable and feels like less of a spoof/caricature. There are more ways to communicate and interact with a present day open world thanks to in-game cell phones, the internet, television, etc. A GTA protag without at least a pager and a payphone on every corner would feel very limited and isolated.

A GTA that was set in the early 70's, then transitions to the late 80's would be pretty cool IMO and then when you complete the story, you can go to both eras and free roam. Kinda like what Driver Parallel Lines did.

GTA game set in the 1970s would be awesome. Many of great action movies were made in this era. Plus the fashion, music and vehicles were also great back then.

You all must be kidding me, GTA 1968 set in the South during the heat of integration staring say an interracial couple? That would top anything Rockstar has ever done.

I really don't believe they could. What era could they cover that hasn't been referenced yet(Major eras in US history that stand out above the rest)? The Miami coke trade of the 80's, the heated tensions of gangs in the 90's, the Mafia's presence in NYC in the 00's , what other era besides maybe the mid 70's drug running from Vietnam/Laos/Cambodia could possibly be done, but besides that, no other era is good enough for a great open world game.
