So, I got Acer Aspire 5551G, and it's old enough so it doesn't have warranty anymore.

So, some weeks ago, I noticed some of my keys aren't working when pressed, sometimes I had to keep on pressing them to make them work, and sometimes they made multiple presses from a regular press. Now, they aren't working at all, no matter how many times and how hard I hit them.

List of keys not working:
T, U, P, J, 3, ?/+, and possibly some others I haven't yet noticed.

Wierd is, both numpad 3 and regular 3 won't work, but PageDown which is shared with Numpad-3 is working when NumLock is on.

And, before I got this non-functioning key-problem, about week before, me and my friend disassembled my laptop, and we replaced thermal glue inside (Or what it is called.) and cleaned from dust, but we had some problems getting keyboard off and back in, maybe connection isn't good and causing this?

Just for grins, and to narrow things down a bit, try connecting a USB keyboard and see what happens.

And to jump the gun a bit, when's the last time you've cleaned the inside? Those things collect the foulest of matter and all it takes is a little moisture for it to congeal and clog up the works. (IE, yer buttons)

I can try with another keyboard tomorrow or day after it.
And I cleaned this (both inside of laptop and keys) when we replaced thermal glues inside.

I read a bit about people with same issue, and they've only had lose cable. I think I could give it a shot, though it's hell to get it off...

Wait. You never said anything about you opening up the laptop to do something.
You opened it to replace the thermal "glue". Ok so did you have to mess with the keyboard at all or more importantly the cable for it while you were messing with whatever else you were doing?

I did say it in first post, last sentence:

We had to begin the disassembly from pushing these tiny socket-like things inside and pop the keyboard off and then remove the cable leading from keyboard to motherboard. We had to do same backwards, attach cable back in, put keyboard on it's place and get those sockets in holes to keep in place.

It was fine for a week, then those keys began slowly non-functioning, and now it has come to the point where I need mouse-keyboard on screen to type.

Sorry. My bad.
Sounds like maybe you didn't put that cable back as well as you thought and something worked it's way loose.

Just curious; why did you replace the thermal compound anyway? I take it this was on the CPU?

I can try taking keyboard off again and checking the cable, though it was annoying to get it off. tounge2.gif

And we decided to try it as it was overheating all the time, and we did same thing (clean-up & compound replacement) for my friends laptop and it gave really good results on heating-issue. Managed to drop from maximum of 90 (!) degrees to maximum of 70. So yeah, hot.

Removed cable finally, and tried adjusting the cable for better position several times, no luck.

I guess I have to buy new keyboard...

If you use this laptop mostly at home and at a desk rather than taking it places and using it, then you'll want to use a full size keyboard most of the time anyway.
You could, for the home use, also just have the laptop sitting on the coffee table while the USB keyboard is in your lap and so you won't have to worry so much about it getting too hot. Reading the screen might be harder but that's on you. biggrin.gif
