Bizarre shooting/crash problem near Star Junction

The nearer to SJ, the more it crashes!

OK, here's a really bizarre relative shooting/crashing issue that only happens in Algonquin...

I'm running plain vanilla GTAIV, no mods at all. The game runs fine, no problems what.so.ever., except...

Whenever I fire a weapon in Algonquin (especially near Star Junction), the game freezes.

It definitely doesn't crash at all on any of the other islands, no matter what/where/how/when I shoot. So most missions, etc, are all fine (except missions involving weapons fire in Algonquin notify.gif ).

The crash occurs with every weapon type, except melee weapons, they seem to be OK. But we all know how hard it is to punch out a mission target vehicle that's running tounge2.gif

But that's not the really weird part. Oh no. The really weird part is :

The further away I get from Star Junction, the less repeatable the problem is, until I leave the island altogether, and then it doesn't crash anymore! (I realise that it might be that the game will eventually crash, if the repeatability factor is low enough out on the other islands, and I only think it's OK; but I've fired every weapon dry from full ammo on bridge exits on Alderney, Dukes/Broker, and Bohan, - which took a very long time mercie_blink.gif - and it's only when I set foot on the island that it seems to occur).

So, for example, if I'm in Purgatory, Middle Park, Middle Park East, or Suffolk, it crashes about every third shot. But if I'm in, say, Northwood, or the Exchange, it crashes about once every 10-15 shots. It doesn't seem to be cop-related - I can shoot and trigger a wanted star (or three or four), and the very next shot will crash. I hope that makes sense.

Cool, huh? Well, until Three Leaf Clover, or any chase-type mission (Holland Nights, etc) that involves bullets in Algonquin, and since I'm about a third of the way through the game, it's a bit of a showstopper for me. It actually took me 53 tries to get through Three Leaf Clover, it just kept crashing; but eventually I made it by only shooting when I was positioned further away from SJ (if that makes sense). (That's when I tested the shooting in Alderney).

I'd really appreciate it if anyone can help me either sort the problem out, or get more data to figure out what's wrong and what I need to change. I'm kinda new to the forums, so if there's anything I should be doing to help you help me, please let me know. I did do a full search for "weapons and crashing", but after 40 pages of search results with threads like "GTA Keeps crashing"/"Game crashes"/"Please help"/"Shooting error" threads, I couldn't find anything similar, and most answers involve reinstalling the game from scratch, so I had to give up and ask you nice people...

Thanks in advance, guys.

Some people did get crashes while shooting, but I don't recall any reasons/solutions.

Two things come to mind:
- do you have an older savegame you can load any try shooting in that area?
- defragment, fragmented game archives are known to cause very weird issues.

Wow, didn't know that. Sounds peculiar, but not as peculiar as the problem it might solve!

I'll try your suggestions and post back when I have a chance, probly later tonight.

Thanks for the suggestions!
