Hi peoples

I have a Win 7 64 bit computer; Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.6Ghz), 4 gig ram, Asus HD6450 1 gig ddr3 video card. I can get GTA running smoothly-ish if I turn everything down to low, and lower the res down to 800x600 (!). The benchmark says 29fps but it feels quite jerky and unstable for 29fps. BTW i'm running the steam download of GTA 4.

What part of my computer is slowing things down the most? The computer is not a home built one, it's an ex-lease computer that I got from work and because it's SFF I can only put a half-height graphics card in it. sad.gif

Thanks for any suggestions you have for improving the performance of GTA 4.

The benchmark is not accurate. Since the game does not scale properly, you can probably raise some settings without losing any performance.
I wouldn't say that any part of your system is being a bottleneck in this case as you need a better CPU and GPU to run this game properly. And if we're talking about an office machine, chances are you'd need a better power supply anyhow.

VisualIV would improve things, but not sure you can use it on a steam version.

Also commandlines -reservedapp 0 and -memrestrict as below.

You can trying using a commandline.

1. Open up notepad.
2. Paste this into notepad.
QUOTE
-novblank
-norestrictions
-frameLimit: 0
-availablevidmem: 2.0
-percentvidmem: 100
-fullspecaudio
-noprecache
-nomemrestrict

3. Save it as commandline, and make sure it's a .txt.
4. Put it in your GTA IV directory.

I hope this helps.

The "-framelimit 0" would limit your framerate to 0, so this one is quite useless.
The "-availablevidmem 2.0" makes you double the VRAM and the "-precentvidmem 100" would tell the game it has as much VRAM as it normally has - useless.

That's not a good commandline, so @OP you should try mine:

QUOTE
-noprecache
-memrestrict 188743680 (<-- depends on your videocard, for help about it, read this)
-reservedapp 0 (<-- only if you have a 64bit OS, do NOT use it if you have a 32bit OS)

That'd help much better, if at all wink.gif

But as mkey82 said, you need a better CPU and GPU to run this game properly.
The videocard is just to weak to produce an acceptable framerate.

-frameLimit is actually a switch and it's either 1 or 0.

You're right, my bad.
But nonetheless, it won't help at all so it's better to leave it out icon14.gif
