Have we had any information that would rule out islands to the west of LA? i.e. Santa Catalina, or a closer version of Hawaii?

Nope.
Those islands may be in the game or they may not.
We just don't know at the moment.

As with all of the GTA games you will probably have to unlock areas as you progress through the storyline. But did anyone think about how they will devide Los Santos. In the other games it was quite easy with rivers and oceans. But Los Santos doesn't seem to have any naturel boundaries. perhaps You start in the city, then unlock the hills and countryside and last you unlock the mountains and desert

The last one looks most accurate. One thing is for sure, there is definitely going to be desert in the game. This is my representation of the map, I doubt it will accurate, but I think it's fairly good.

I think that map is a very good start. Of course I have no proof but I expect the following will also be included:

- Santa Barbara/Malibu
- San Diego (possibly including Tijuana)
- Palm Springs (including the cable car up to the mountains)
- some kind of abandoned Gold Rush style town (a la RDR)

I also suspect the sea will come round and form the northern boundary. Looking good though.

I'm with you on this. I've already made my case form why I'm convinced the Windfarm is the one north of Palm Springs and the mountain people think is Mt. Chilliad is actually San Jacinto.

I spent a long time last night trying to work out where the vin yard was. Southern California has a number of vin yards, but almost all the them seem to be on very flat land. The two obvious exceptions are Temecula and Shadow Mountain (both on route 79) between Palm Springs and San Diego, but I couldn't find anything similar on google street view or google images to back this up.

As your map is... in my eyes, the most accurate. I decided to add what I think could be included.
San Diego, Tijuana and the US-Mexico Border

I think we are looking at the most accurate map so far. It looks similar to the old LS, but a newer version, which adheres to all the rumours and fact that we have seen so far.

Why would it be unclimbable mountains?

In RDR it was used to block the player. In GTA V it wont serve any purpose at all (?!) because you'll be able to fly over the mountains with a helicopter or aeroplane anyway.

The supposed R* source stated that the highest mountains and those which would stop you escaping the map would be of a higher altitude than possible when flying aircraft, and therefore you wouldn't be able to fly over them. This seems like it could be accurate.

Oh I'm sure they'll find a way. If they do decide to block unlockable areas, I think they'll probably use barriers and use tunnels like they have done in GTA III and IV. The barriers don't necessarily have to be natural such as rivers.

I hope there are areas that have to be unlocked though. The thought of exploring a brand new place is amazing imo.

Hey, did you all know that the area north of LA, just past the mountains has an Air Force base, an Army air field, a USMC LIVE FIRE training ground, and a little thing called China Lake. China lake being an R&D facility as well as Testing ground for navy areal weapons platforms and the like. I just have 4 words. ENFORCED. NO. FLY. ZONE.
To the south a USMC Base and east, just past the desert and the national parks, you have Yuma Proving Ground, an Army weapons testing area, as well as an Air Force Base. 2 Words. SEE. ABOVE.
All of these places being at least as big as LA itself.

So if things are exaggerated or compressed enough, the entire area surrounding the Los Santos region could be NO FLY as far as small aircraft are concerned. Reasons being that there might be a heightened state of alert because of terrorism or the like.

There is a "map" of the golf course in the trailer, showing exactly how it's shaped.

The reason I am saying this is because all of you seem to make your own versions of it, instead of cut-rotate-paste.

This can also be useful if we can find the golf club on the skyline picture, to understand how the map size and the buildings are in relation to eachother.

I think the way the map will be unlocked is the way RDR had it or SA

The map on the golf sign is just for that one hole, not the full course.

I thought about this to. Using google earth it seems there are a lot of vineyards in the mountains north of malibu, so that's why I put them in my map. I like the idea of the map stretching from Malibu in the west to palm springs in the east.
