Who here does Scale Models, be it trains, cars, ships, or anything? I'll get the ball rolling with some pictures I took a while ago with my sh*tty Ipod camera:

Anyway, I always thought scale models were pretty cool. My grand-father does trains, and every year for christmas he sets his whole town up around his house for fun. Out of curiosity, how much does a hobby like this cost you? I've seen single trains going for quite a bit.

Depends on the brand. Here in America, you can get fairly cheap models at swapmeets (where I usually get my models). Most of the money is taken up by locomotives and track/power though, rolling stock and scenery is pretty cheap, depending on the brand

Another German plane. I cannot remember the name of it. This was custom made by me and Amy Jones. The dust is left on the wings.

I have a small collection of 1:500 Herpa commercial aircraft. I also had a miniature airport set up but I put most of them back into their boxes and had them placed in storage to reduce clutter in my apartment. Will try to find some pics.

I was a huge fan of all kind of scale models, not so much now. I have plastic kit models of cars, ships, planes, tanks...everything. Especially valuable are 1:43 scale model cars. Diecast 1:24s are also in my collection, those are not expensive tough but some are with great quality. The plastic kits i have are mostly from WW2 like the Tiger tank, GAZ MM truck, Katyusha, a little messerschmit plane also. Then i have a UAZ 469 also, from later period. A 1:400 scale Titanic model, really really detailed. Still not finished tough. Also a huge scale 747 from Revell. I have made some dioramas too, really enjoyed doing those in the past.

I always regretted the fact I never had an interest in scale models as a kid, it would have helped me vastly in what I do now.

I'm currently at University doing Theatre Design, So I have to make a model box's of stage set designs.
Here's the last one I did, it's set in a 1950's flat in Manchester (A Taste of Honey was the play, for any Theatre fans here)
It's all made from scratch, with many different materials you can get from art shops. The scale is 1:25, I messed up the sofa's scale, that's why it appears huge and takes up more space than it should. If you have any questions about it or how it was made just ask!

I've also made a Fallout NV style Diorama, It was one of the first set style pieces I made so it's a bit rough. If anyone's interested I'll upload a few pictures I have of it.

This stuff is awesome, I'd love to see more. I'm currently organizing material for an art show in early spring/late winter which I'm planning to have both hung pieces and campy 60's scifi movie sets as art installations.

WastedEngland, that looks awesome dude. I wish I had the time to do this kind of stuff. When I was younger I was more into painting than modeling.

@WastedEngland: That looks very similar to the "Bottom" TV show set:

It's the only picture I could find to show what I mean. You won't understand the picture unless you saw the episode:

Anyway, I'm liking some of these models. I have an interest in them, but I don't simply have the money to pursue it as a hobby or project. I might try something soon though.

I'd love to see the Fallout ones you've done, too.

I've wanted to get into making models (more specifically, a model of Bohan from IV) for quite some time but have no idea how to get started. I have so many questions as to how it's all done. I think I'd need a fair few quid to get things started too which, at the moment, isn't really going to happen. Bloody Christmas.

Thanks for the comments guys!!
If anyone wants help in model making check out this guys website: http://www.david-neat.co.uk/home/home.htm
In my first year he came and did a masterclass on model making, his site has a few pdfs about materials and run downs on a few techniques. Admittedly it's more a live demonstration based subject, so searching youtube would probably be better for how to's. You can message me also, I'll help where I can smile.gif

@4 Bagger
Good eye! I got a lot of inspiration from Bottom and especially The Young Ones:

@TheGreatGig23
I'm not sure on how much help I would be with buildings and structures, an architect/architect student will probably be able to help you more on making multiple larger structures, I'd be more than happy to help you with the artistic and more detailed side of it though, e.g the street props, misc items etc.
The one bit of advice that I think would be universal is start with a lot of paper drawings and planning. That kind of model making is layered, if you get a few layers in realise you made a mistake earlier down the line, it'd be very difficult or even impossible to correct once the glue has dried, bits have been cut etc. Like Universetwisters asked, you'll have to decide a scale before you start anything.
I think a good model of Bohan would be amazing though, it'd take a large amount of time and patience (and possibly money) but the achievement gained from it would be off the scale. Quite sure it'd gather quite a lot of attention too, probably even from Rockstar themselves.

Here's the Fallout NV-esque model I made:

I have some more images of the fallout sets separate pieces (like the last 2 above) and a few 'in progress' shots of both sets if people want to see them, otherwise I don't want to flood the thread.

The big question: what scale?

And this is where I get lost lol.gif In all seriousness, I have no idea how to scale it down so I'm not at all sure. The space I have to make it in is roughly 8ft x 10ft so it would have to fit in there with enough room to maneuver around.

@ WastedEngland: Those Fallout ones are bloody nice, especially with the lighting effects. That wooden hut has got some lovely detail, too. Cheers for the tips and the link to that chap. I'll definitely give it a look. I have a quick question, when you say that it would be layered, do you mean as in starting with terrain, then street props and then buildings or something along those lines?

I love scale models.

I used to build settings be it villages, towns, even cities, out of model railway (Hornby) sets, Lego pieces, even Jenga blocks (building towers/skyscrapers was a hobby of mine). Sadly I only took pictures of a select few projects, and those pics are on a different computer. confused.gif I'll search them up. I even remember making a desert oasis diorama for a project in my old school. Got top marks for it too.
