In my opinion San Andreas is the most overrated game in the GTA series. It has always been my least favorite GTA. I have my reasons for disliking SA.

1. The setting is not my thing. I don't like the whole street gang/"gangsta" crap. It just does NOT interest me. That alone made me have doubts about San Andreas.

2. CJ is a crappy protagonist. He took way too much crap from people like Tenpenny, he was kicked around for almost the entire game. If that had been Tommy Vercetti in CJ's place during many of those cutscenes with C.R.A.S.H, Tenpenny would been shot in the face. I did like Tenpenny as a villan, he was one of the redeeming factors of San Andreas.

3. A LOT of annoying missions. So many of the missions in San Andreas where not enjoyable, they where just frustrating and annoying. I don't play GTA to play some crappy DDR clone minigame.

Just a few of my gripes with San Andreas. Feel free to give your feedback.

To be honest, my favorite is San Andreas and my least favorite (aside from the Stories) is Vice City. Tommy Vercetti was a BAMF, yeah that's cool. But I felt no connection with him. His character was just kind of robotic and predictable to me. Maybe it's just because I haven't played it since I was a little kid that I feel this way, but the game is kind of overrated. It's still a great game however.

San Andreas is excellent and all, but IMO people tend to have their respective nostalgia filters on when remembering it. GTA3 and Vice City had by far the best aesthetics of the series, whereas replaying San Andreas just makes it look samey and bland.

To answer your question, no, I don't think that GTA San Andreas is overrated. It was and is still a great game and IMO is better than any other GTA, including IV, TLAD and
TBoGT.

1. The setting is not my thing. I don't like the whole street gang/"gangsta" crap.

You clearly never played the entire game. Your start off in Ganton, which is a gang-revolved area, but you need to take yourself to the top of the city, so you advance to a countryside next, where you meet The Truth. The Truth takes you to San Fierro (based on San Francisco), where there is much less gang members, and the only ones that are there are the San Fierro Rifa (a small Mexican gang), The Triads (a Chinese tong), and the Da Nang Boys (a weak Vietnamese gang). So you can see the ganglife-orientation soon wears off. You then go to the desert of Bone County, where you work for the likes of Mike Toreno, who works for an unnamed government agency. And before you know it you in Las Venturas (based on Las Vegas) where you basically are only working for you friend Wu Zi Mu (who you own a casino with) and the Mafia. The game then sets the last seven or eight missions back in Los Santos, where CJ returns to his gang-orientated lifestyle.

As you can see, there is way more to the game than gangs.
QUOTE
2. CJ is a crappy protagonist

Well that's your opinion and you're entitled to it.you may say that he got pushed around, but he was framed for the murder of a police officer, so he couldn't do anything else. You might say that he should've just shot Tenpenny in the face, but have you heard of something called dignity, or respect?
QUOTE
3. A LOT of annoying missions.

Again, this is your opinion and imnot stopping you from expressing it, but if you actually listen to the plot and storyline you'll find that they're actually really well planned and Rockstar out a lot of effort into getting the continuity correct. And you'll only ever find one continuity arrow in the entire game.

I agree. I found the game world to be gloomy and boring. And I am certainly not a fan of the 'gangster' setting.

Vice city is by far my favourite. The setting is very vibrant and colourful, and the game just feels much more pleasant than the depressing ghetto of San Andreas.

Nope, it's the greatest game of all time. The setting is the best ever and I wish more games would be based around the ghettos of South Central in the 90s with the awesome music. And CJ is an excellent protagonist.

That "Tommy would have shot him in the face" thing is the biggest pile of sh*t I've ever heard. Carl can't do sh*t because CRASH threaten to make him responsible for the murder of Officer Pendelburry which they had Hernandez do and then when Sweet is arrested, he's even forced more to do their dirty work since they can put him in a cell with Ballas members which is just horrible for him. If Carl had a choice, he would have shot them in the spot, but he doesn't. He kills Tenpenny and the cops will be all over him for the death of an officer. Now I know it's a game and you shoot people all over the place and get away with it but the storyline is the realistic part where shooting important people like Tenpenny will only land you in hot water.

I respect your opinion. But here are m,y views.

The Gameplay: I loved it, in fact I love all the gang scenes
CJ: He is awesome he had nothing in the beginning and had everything in the end. icon14.gif
Missions: I found every mission challenging and didn't hate them.
Map: It was huge and I loved the country side.

How could San Andreas be overrated from an objective point of view ... The game had great features that were new at the time and if you don't like Los Santos for example, then there are other cities and places which should't be disappointments for you. Same thing goes with cars and missions. There were over twice as many sports car and regular cars than in GTA III. Many entertaining missions, both main and sub-missions.

But I respect people who think San Andreas is a little bit overrated. I don't agree with these opinions but let's face it. Everyone doesn't think the protagonist is cool and everyone doesn't think the storyline was epic and so on. But speaking objectively, San Andreas is far from being an overrated game.

I have fond memories, but that's 'cause it's the first GTA I played. I'm playing through all PS2 GTA's (finished III, now playing Vice City) that I haven't played before, so once I complete all of those plus San Andreas I'll be in a better position to compare.

One more thing I love about San Andreas is how it never got old. Me and my brother got it the week it came out in 2004. I'm still playing it today in 2012. I play San Andreas more than I play IV and the DLC from that. San Andreas might be the only game that I give a 10/10 to.

yes i mean they had great idea with gangs and los santos setting, but they dont stick to it and story isnt really complete, and cj is so annoying wit his voice and complaining, but dont get me wrong it's awesome game but it's a little bit overrated and main reason could be that it has enormous world with 3 cities and countryside but other aspects arent on same level as that

Do you know what gloomy means? Anyways, It's not overrated. It's seems like the people who dislike it already have that opinion before they start the game. "Gangsta" "ghetto" ect, seem to be used quite often even though that's a small part of the game. You become a successful entrepreneur and save an entire city from the grips of drugs and police corruption.

The missions were varied, not the typical 'go there and shoot them' style missions we have to do in many other games, including other GTAs.

How so? It wraps up quite well.

SA is a great game but I think it is a little over rated. People make it sound like it was made by god himself when they talk about it in relation to 4. IMO SA and IV are pretty much neck and neck in terms of greatness and I can't choose a favorite based strictly on quality. But I give the edge to SA because of nostalgia and the memories. But based purely on quality IV and SA are pretty much tied.

It is in some ways. I think the game has a lot going on for it in terms of a big and varied map, awesome soundtrack (K-DST fan here) etc, but at the same time I don't like micro management aspect, dull and bland sidemissions, the lifeless city streets etc.

One thing I have noticed though is a lot more people are willing to share their true feelings on SA now it's getting older. When GTA IV first came out I swear this place was a haven for SA fanboys to circle jerk eachother.

It was as if every SA loving cock knocker invaded the GTA IV forum. Thankfully it's no where near as bad now.
