Hey guys, I'm building a new PC later this month. Not what I used to be with hardware gizmos, so I've got some questions^^

This is what I am currently considering buying:

RAM: Kingston 8GB (2 x 4GB)
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz
GPU: Saphire Radeon HD 5870 (tentative, it's hard to find one now -- considering the 7850)
Tower: this
  • Would I run into any issues with the above?
  • Would you suggest something else (budget = $800, give or take $50)? I'm mainly buying this to play Skyrim with mods and Guild Wars 2, with the excuse of my compilers requiring more CPU lol
  • If they're fine and dandy, what would be a good motherboard/power supply?
Thanks, guys.

The gpu is a bit old, how much is it? newegg mobile sucks and I couldn't find the 5870, because you might be better off with something newer.

Yeah, it's an oldie lol but runs like a charm from what I've seen from friends. It's $300-400 I believe, but I'm not too sure on it myself. It's mostly a "always wanted one of them!" choice lol. I'm considering a 570 or a 7850 instead, though I'm mostly leaning towards the 570.

If you want to buy a HD5870 then you're a bit late. They're not sold anymore since way more than a year.

Are the GPU, CPU, RAM and case the only things you buy, or you buy a whole PC?

I like that Video Card^^ Any idea on power supply?

@yojo The whole thing, but I'm still deciding on a motherboard and power supply.

Antec 550W - Antec BP550 Plus 550W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply. $65 (6850 requires 500watt)

Coolermaster HAF 912 $59.99.

That goes over budget, you can cut back on a few things, that's up to you.
I would recommend saving up more if you really want to get a PC to last a few more years, this one is fairly moderate and if you want windows, a monitor, keyboard and mouse all for $800 you will wanna cut back another $100-$150 on your budget, and you end up with a very not future proof PC that is already quite dated.

BP550 is nothing special for the price, maybe besides modularity. NEO ECO 520C is a better choice when it comes to eletrical parameters. Or even better - Rosewill Hive 550W- which is based on a newer more advanced platform than both Antecs, and it's modular. Great value for money.

PS. HD6850 doesn't really need 500W wink.gif
