To me, Niko is ultimately a good guy. Unfortunately he always seems to end up with the wrong people, and will do most things for money.
However, he does have morals, and will spare people when he can. If he feels something is wrong, he won't do it, even if it puts himself at risk (Revenge Ending, when Peg wants him to do the deal) and will help people when he can (Random Characters, Marnie etc).
