Right... two different sports, two styles of play, but I gotta say football is the tougher sport. Maybe got it a little easy if you are a kicker or punter.
That's your opinion, fair enough. However the pressure on the neck and shoulders of front row rugby players is estimated at around 5 tons. You don't get that pressure anywhere in American football. That would be like the entire other team sitting on your shoulders.
That is just this seasons big hits... they didn't even show all of them so far plus this season isn't over yet. I always hear this "Why do they wear padding?" bullsh*t. Maybe for the safety for the players, and the players have learned to use this "safety" as a weapon as well knocking dudes out literally. This is a dirty, rough and tough sport as is Rugby... in its on short-shorts wearing way.
You can say all you want about shock and pressure along with 5 tons of ass on your neck and shoulders, but it won't affect my 'mind-shattering hit from Ray Lewis' of an ideal about American Football.
That second video wasn't a hit, it was just a helmet to helmet contact. That isn't in any way a sporting play. That is just knocking someone out with a dick move. Rugby players can do that too:

Jesus Christ^ What a punch. Gosh i dislike Super league though (Not that ^ Unrelated topic), whenever they snap up Aussie players upon return they are strangely skinnier and unfitter.

both sports are vicious in their own ways. American football is more regulated for safety compared to Rugby but they still have some nasty bone jarring hits.

Only recently. Helmets are just as much a weapon... I've seen someone with a planted foot and take a diving helmet of a 270 pound lineman right to the knee... He fell forward over it and his toe Damn near touched his hip... You can't really get any more gruesome than that.

Was at a Northumbria Uni vs Newcastle Uni 'friendly' a few years ago when my flatmate played for Northumbria. Northumbria and Newcastle are rival unis so Rugby matches always get dirty. One of the Northumbria players went in for the ball at full speed at the same time a Newcastle player was going for it, their heads smashed together right on the forehead, we heard the crack from the other side of the pitch, genuinely made me feel a bit sick hearing it. Northumbria player somehow walked away, albeit with blood streaming down his face, Newcastle player went into a fit and had to get taken away by Ambulance (he was ok after a few days in hospital). Seriously brutal and that was an amateur game!

For my high school football team, we play rugby for conditioning, and man is it fun.. and tiring. I remember running for a 100 yard try (if that's the right term) and immediately had to get on defense again. There's no rest like there is in Football, and at the end of the game I felt like I had to puke. Although I still prefer American Football, those hits are too satisfying.
Definitely Rugby I'd say. ALthough I mostly watch American Football, Rugby has to be a way tougher sport, not just because of the fact that they don't wear protection but unlike in American Football where the game constantly stops after each play Rugby is a continuous game.
