Earlier this week I bought GTA IV and all of the DLCs off of Steam. Whenever I try to start it up and it asks me to log into Windows Live and I accept, the log in keeps loading. The only way I have ever stopped this was when I have to minimize the game and then maximize it again. when this happens, it gives the little pop up that says hit the home button to bring up Windows Live, and two commands at the bottom to hit escape and enter. But at this point the game freezes and I need to open up task manager to close it at this point. I got around this by logging onto GTA IV offline from Windows Live and then when I am in the game, I log on and it works. But the first time I tried this, after about an hour of playing I got a fatal error: ZLIB20. If I were to reinstall the game would I be able to keep my saves? Has anyone else experienced this problem and fixed it successfully?

you forgot the most important , the GPU . GFWL problem may be caused by several things . it could be a bad installation , a lack of update .. i suggest you to install xliveless for your game version , this will allow you to get rid of GFLW thing

At this point the game has been freezing every single time I cross the algonquin bridge. The game doesn't lag whatsoever so I can't figure out the problem. Would reinstalling help?

Well my GPU (Sapphire Radeon HD 6950) runs everything on ultra including crysis which is more graphics entensive than GTA IV. I lowered all graphics settings to nothing and tried to cross the bridge again, but my game still froze. The only thing I ever have running in the backround is Skype, but I don't think that has anything to do with the problem. I'm using no mods, I just bought the game off steam like 4 days ago. This computer is brand new so everything is up to date. If it matters i'm using windows 7 ultimate with I assume service pack 1.

not totally sure about that user posted image . GTA is a nice game but very detailled and thus very ressource demanding . but your lag is weird . did you check your FW and AV to see if they were interfering in background

I'd be lying if I said I knew completely what you were talking about :X All I know is that when I am running the game nothing else is running in the backround. I actually tried lowering the graphics to see if it had something to do with it but it didn't. I'm now reinstalling the game to see if it will work.

He's talking about antivirus (AV) and firewalls (FW.)

From what you're telling us, it seems to me that:
a) your download was busted, in that case a cache verification from the steam game options can help
b) your hard drive is heavily fragmented, in that case I recommend doing defragmenting your drives
c) the drive may have bad sectors, but if you say the PC is newly build, that's not very probable

Finally I can now cross the bridge. But still, unless I am missing something (New to PC gaming) I feel like I am missing important folders from my GTA IV folder from the installation. I would call myself an idiot if I thought the only folder in the GTA IV folder is the Music one.my folder
