Just for the sake of memory, I was playing with my old, dusty Ps1 yesterday (it barely works...but works), and I had a strange idea: with the modern emphasis on DLCs, pre-order, multiplayer and all sort of "extra" things... how will we play those modern games in 10 years? In a world of PS4 and XBOX One (or maybe the next version of them), what will happen when we'll find our "old" ps3/360 in a dusty place in our house, and we'll try to play some games (or hunt them down in the nearest retrogame store)?
Multiplayer: gone for sure... too bad for those games who are made mostly for multiplayer action
Trophies/achievements: they will still work? And what about online trophies?
dlc/preorder contents: lost forever (if the game lacks a "complete edition")? I have Assassin creed II that still mocks me because "we have a memory we can't reach [AKA: it's a DLC], do you want to upgrade the Animus? [AKA: buy the DLC or get out]", 10 year from now it will be impossible to reach 100% with that copy...
I'm not talking about "DLC/multiplayer are good/bad", but the fact that now I have some PS1-PS2 games that I can play (and reach 100% of the experience) every time I want... will it be possible with my ps3 games in the future?
