This thread will talk about next-generation consoles, what games are already in development and what to expect from Rockstar (GTA V wise).

Like most of us already know, next-generation consoles are bound to happend within a year or two.

While Wii-U is launching this November, I am not counting that console as a true next-gen device.
Nintendo has already stated several times that the don't follow Microsoft and Sony's cycle, but their own.
The reason I don't look at it as a true next-gen device is because if it's specs. Although they are not revealed to the public yet, we know it's on pair with the 360 and PS3.

What proof do I have to back-up my statement about next-generation consoles arriving within a year or two?

Microsoft Durango/xbox720
At the beginning of 2012 (February) rumors started flooding the internet about a device codenamed "Durango". Which a few days later was "confirmed" to be the next xbox by a Crytek employee, who attendend the Durango developers summit in London.

Xbox 720 to support Skype according to job listing – report

Digital Foundry reports a dodgy-looking development kit detailed on a developer forum is the real deal – an authentic Durango, the code name for the next Xbox console.

Xbox 720 – rumoured first image of Kinect 2 dev tool

Playstation 4/Orbis
A month later, the first rumors about Sony's next generation device arrived. The playstation "orbis" which was now rumored to be launching during the holyday season of 2013.

Sony working on PlayStation 4 since August 2010, says CV
A LinkedIn CV of an ex-SCEA R&D director has revealed that Sony has been working on the successor to PlayStation 3 since August 2010 or earlier.

PlayStation 4: Sony “confident” of pre-Xbox 720 release

“Sony are completely in the belief that they have the jump on Microsoft this time. You should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.”

So now we had some "proof" that both next generation consoles was in development.

EA: statement
EA: next-gen consoles out “probably starting next year”
EA CEO John Riccitiello has said he’s expecting full next-gen console reveals in 2013.

Following the months that came after, lots of rumours surfaced. People where getting excited about E3, because they thought/hoped that Microsoft or Sony would announce their new devices. But as E3 came, our dreams were quickly crushed.

What developers has already started working on games for the PS4/720 you may ask?

Crytek:

Crytek: CryEngine “pushing the boundaries”, “way beyond next-gen consoles already”,

We’ve been touting CryEngine as a next-gen technology for about two years now. Since 2010 CryEngine has been next-gen ready. You look at today’s next-gen offerings with supposedly next-gen graphics… That’s exactly what we were talking about two years ago,” he said.

Edios Montreal
Thief4: Thief 4 to launch on Xbox 720, PS4, says mag report
Thief 4 will miss out on the current generation of console hardware, according to a new report in the latest issue of OXM.

2K games
Mafia 3 in development for Xbox 720 & PS4 – Report
Mafia 3 is currently in development for next-gen consoles, according to an alleged 2K Games source close to Eurogamer.cz.
The source also claims Mafia 3 will launch 2013.

CD projekt
CD Projekt is extremely busy, as it has said it’s working on a game engine for next-gen PC and console systems; has two AAA+ titles in the works – one for 2014 and one for 2015; two “A” games for release in 2012; and one “AA” game slated for 2013.

Activition

Infinity Ward CV suggests next CoD will release on both current and next-gen systems. 2013

Rockstar Games

My guess is that since we have not seen anything about Agent(PS3) since 2009. This game has slipped into being a game for next-gen platforms.

Now the big question is about GTA V.

Will Rockstar be affected by the next-gen leap, why have they been so secretive about the platforms for this game?
The fact that they have not showed us the platform lineup for this game makes me wonder about if we might see it on PS3/360 and later on the PS4/720.

What do you guys think?

Clearification: I know GTA V will release on current gen, this is just me asking if they might release it alongside next-gen aswell.
If you know about more games in development for next gen, please be sure to share them so I can add them to the list.

I think Rockstar has actually treated this generation as a stopgap and exercise for the next one. They haven't put out that many games but restructured their business. They went from a single developer using modified middleware into multiple studios utilizing the same inhouse engine and launched new franchises. If they have a launch title, I think it'll be one of the other franchises. Possibly Bully2 because it's a t-rated game.

RAGE is a peculiar beast. Look at the incredibly low settings it runs IV with. It seems built with next gen in mind more than anything. IV on consoles is maybe running at 20% of it's potential (with unlimited hardware. Since IV came out they've added all the essential features to support next gen, like 64 bit support, multicore, directx 11. Same with Euphoria, what's on display in this gen's games is just fraction of what it can potentially do.

nice post alot better than some of the spam we have been seeing lately icon14.gif

OT: for the ps3 and xbox 360 i hope it comes to this gen of consoles. i have ps3 and highish end pc so not too worried about platform restrictions.
i think it would be strange for a game to be released across generations like this , is there any others other than what was mentioned to be released like this, have they (devs) ever released games across the timeline as it were before ?

tbh i dont think will be both generations. but i hope ps3 or xbox360 limitaions dont hold the game back. but in that way if it is a this generation release its going to be more sooner than later release id say.

I'm not sure you get what i'm saying. I KNOW ITS CURRENT GEN, but do you think a PS4/720 launch will happend aswell. Like Call of Duty next year will most likely be current and next gen..

is what I said.

You know that towards the end of a console cycle. Games release for both right?

FIFA PS2 / PS3

ect ect ect

GTA V, can be released for 360/PS3 and PS4/720.

No, I get what your saying. I know they release games for both gens. I'm just saying that I don't think that V will be out on PS4/720.

V will be out before June 2013. We will probably get our first sight of new consoles at E3 next year then it'll be another year before they come out. No way they'll delay V to 2014. Maybe FY2014, yes tounge.gif

Well, they would have to make the decision if they wanted it to be for PS3/360 or 720/PS4, and it seems as if they made the PS3/360 decision (during the conference call they said they expect 1.8 billion within the first half of the fiscal year) so my only concern is as some of the biggest developers they must of known about the new software and decided that it wasn't that big of an upgrade from the current gens. Or they just wanted to milk one last title on the current gens.

There are few examples of games released on both the old and new console of the same brand. Particularly for Rockstar, Bully for Xbox was cancelled before Bully Scholarship Edition for Xbox 360 was announced. The Xbox 360 console was announced shortly after Bully for Xbox was announced. Bully Scholarship Edition didn't ship until the Xbox 360 has been out over 2 years!

There are several cases in which a game announced for the new generation gets cancelled and it's released on the old generation. Perhaps most infamously, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings was released for older consoles after a demo had been shown of an HD Indiana Jones game with Euphoria for 360/PS3. Scarface: The World Is Yours also fell back to last gen after being announced for 360/PS3. The huge install base of old gen is a safer bet than hoping your next-gen graphics will attract a higher percentage of a smaller platform.

Releasing for current gen and doing next gen later isn't an attractive proposition. People will have already played it and it won't be THAT much better with next gen graphics and a little bit of new content. It would be better to develop an all-new game for next gen and not waste effort.

Well things are really starting to piss me off actually, what i hear is GTAV pushing to fiscal 2014 and also the new bioshock as well (i hope that is not true) but for next-gen? it seems a bit off from a different direction in my opinion. This doesn't mean its coming out in 2013 etc...But I expect next-gen coming out in 2015 and it seems to make even more sense. confused.gif As for a release date? sh*t this is what i'm really looking at.

If you read the thread properly, you can see that a few next gen games are already planing on releasing in late 2013. Which means 2013 next gen launch is very likely. How can u release games without a new console tounge.gif

I've noticed that to, but your right on that actually. icon14.gif Btw if any of you people haven't seen this? check this out

"We've operated Hotmail for about 16 years, we obviously have Exchange and Outlook that people use at work, and we just decided it was time to do something new and bring the best from each of those and put them together and release it right in time for the new wave of products that we have coming out with Windows 8, with the new version of Office, with the New Windows Phone and the new Xbox,"
he said on The Verge.
Source GI

But he didn't actually said that i don't know if Microsoft is that dumb or what?

"When Brian mentioned a ‘new wave of products,’ he was referring to the full lineup of products coming later this year from Microsoft, including Windows 8, Office, Windows Phone and of course our fall Xbox update which will bring a host of new consumer experiences like Xbox Music, Videos, Games on Windows 8 and Xbox SmartGlass."
Source GI

What are your thought's on this? seems to me that Microsoft is covering it up.

I can't imagine what Rockstar's going to do for the new consoles. That sh*t is going to be mind blowing. Imagine a brand new Red Dead game on the next gen, or Bully 2. If someone asked me the question whether i want Bully 2 first or a new Red Dead, that would be hard question to answer, but i really really want to see a Bully 2 on next gen. A new Red Dead is pretty much a given, seeing how much of a success RDR was. But i'm not sure how much of a success Bully was.

As for the consoles itself, i hope Microsoft will not ignore the true gamers out there. And with that i mean, they should invest in some new IP's, you can only have so many Gears of Wars and Halos before it becomes boring as f*cking hell. Don't get me wrong, i'm definitely looking forward to Halo 4 this year, even though i'm not a hardcore fan of it, but enough already with only Halo and Gears being the top games for Microsoft. Don't even get me started on Fable, lol. And then there's Kinect..nothing but a fail if you ask me, but a fail that sells incredibly well but is absolutely not for the 'hardcore' gamers out there. But no doubt they are putting Kinect V2 in the new Xbox, all fine and dandy MS..but don't forget about the folks who made your console big from the start.

No idea what to expect from Sony to be honest and i don't even want to begin to talk about Nintendo with their Wii U, after their horrible E3.

Yeah i agree man. I love that game, when i have some money i'm going to buy it on Games on Demand on Xbox 360. It's only 20 euros and very very worth it. Plus it's the Scholarship Edition that has new content. I had it on PS2 , back when it was actually called Canis Canem Edit smile.gif
