Odd; I'm a led-by in VC and I can delete post.

BTW on a personal note. I didn't do it for the karma star, but thanks for the offer. I'm not a karma whore, I don't give a rat's fat hairy a** about karma one way or the other. I did because I'm tired of that question for one and a few other popping up over and over again. But I still don't think anyone will read this freakin topic, even if all the FAQs were in just the first post of the topic.

I don't suggest the tweak they do of; Set the value of browser.xul.error_pages.enabled to "true" for me this was more annoying than helpful

How do I change my IP address? I'm using cable/dsl.

Static IPYou'll have to call your ISP and ask them to change it.
For Dynamic IPs
with a router:
Log into your router and go to the Status page and find the Release and Renew buttons.
Click Release and wait about 5 secs then click Renew and a new IP address should be assigned.
For Dynamic IPs
without a router
and Win9*/ME:
Start->Run type: winipcfg
Select your network adaptor
Click Release
Wait a few secs
Click Renew
For Dynamic IPs
without a router
and Win2k/XP:
Start->Run type: cmd
At the promt type: ipconfig /release
Then type: ipconfig /renew

or

Get Microsoft's wntipcfg
Then follow the exact same steps as using winipcfg for Win9*/ME

Few more FAQ.

Internet Explorer doesn't seem to be work, what can I do?
Well, If you really like Internet Explorer that much run Wolf Scans. This consists of (if I'm not mistaken) Anti-virus, and anti-spyware. But everyone suggests to get firefox from here.

My internet seems slow, and sometimes doesn't load pages.
Again spyware and virus scans are extremely important here, you may have spyware openning ports which therefore is using more on your internet connection, more common to those with dial-up.

What's spyware?
Spyware is monitoring applications, which can do anything.

What are dialers?
These are .exe applications, which connect you to a website unknownly, if you don't check task manager regularly (or scan your computer too).
These are a type of spyware.

Use these free Guides to save yourself time and headaches:

Optimize XP - A Windows XP Optimization Guide

"Clean Spyware and Viruses + Optimize Windows XP to improve home, work and gaming performance safely. Windows XP's default configuration is far from optimized. This Free guide will help you improve your overall system performance without having to manually edit the Registry."

Diagnose XP - A Windows XP Diagnostic Guide

"The following Free guide will help you troubleshoot the most common causes of system problems. Diagnosing System problems can be very complicated and time consuming. There are no simple solutions. Windows XP systems should never Lock-up (freeze), display Blue Screen Stop Errors or Randomly Reboot. These are all warning signs something is wrong or misconfigured with your system."

Driver XP - A Windows XP Driver Guide

"Installing the latest drivers improves system performance and application compatibility. Updated drivers include numerous bug fixes as well as system optimizations. It is recommended for optimal system stability to only use Official drivers and not Beta or Prerelease versions. Performance differences between driver versions including Beta or Prereleased drivers is negligible. The only time Beta or Prerelease drivers should be considered is when a serious application bug is fixed in the Beta or Prerelease version and the component manufacturer has not yet released the Official driver version that includes the bug fix."

How about Indexing?

This topic contains very useful info but people will look only at the first post, so why not put an index at the very beginning?

How to narrow down problems with Firefox

1. Exit FF
2. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Application Data\Mozilla
3. Rename that folder; eg: Mozilla-MINE
4. Restart FF and see if you have the problem.

If the problem is fixed, then....
1. Exit FF go back to Mozilla-MINE, go deeper until you fine bookmarks.html and copy this file
2. Go the new Mozilla folder go the same depth and paste the bookmarks.html overwrite the one that's there, or delete the one that's there then paste in the old
3. Reinstall your themes one at a time and see if you have the problem come back
4. Reinstall your extension looking for the problem again.
Optionsl: Tip for the last 2 steps, get the FF extension Restart Firefox. Then when you install an theme or extension you can just select Restart Firefox from the File menu and save some time.

If the problem is still present, then ask your question in the forums and give as much detail as possible and besure to mention that you have already done the above.

QUOTE (wolf68k @ Jan 15 2004, 04:54)
FAQ Index brought to you by: facugaich
(besure to read this whole page and any others for other answers to very common questions)

Before you post a question answer the common questions the helpers will be asking you because you left it out.
Basically just fill out the form, as it were:

We Need To Know (In Order of Importance)
Operating System (OS): plus the version
Amount of RAM: (the speed might help in some cases but rarely)
Internet connection type: (also be sure to include if you use a router [Linksys, D-Link, or a computer acting as the firewall] or not, and if you're connected to it WiFi, ethernet or usb)
Video Card: brand and model
Motherboard (mobo): brand and model (if you're having motherboard problems, it'll also help us if we know the brand and date of your BIOS)
Processor (CPU): brand and speed
Sound Card: brand and mode

If you can't answer all of the questions, then get the following freeware; Everest Home Edtion either the ZIP or the EXE. Both are the same; the only difference is one uses an installer, the other you unzip and extract to a folder of your choice...the EXE will be fine for most people.

If applicable, the most important part is Hardware with problems: brand and model

Make sure you've updated to the latest drivers for your computer, as well as the item with problems, and OS.
Make sure you've completely read the manual and any other text documents for your troublesome hardware or software (you'd be surprised how many issues can be solved just reading that stuff alone).

---

Links you should know, but in case you don't: (there base links to the more common hardware and software makers) [those that know of other links I should add, PM me and I'll add them] I know most of these are already covered in another topic but these relate to the common questions asked
Microsoft.com plus Microsoft Windows Update
Apple.com plus: Quicktime and iTunes
nVidia.com plus nVidia Drivers
ATI.com plus ATI Drivers
Linksys.com plus Drivers and Firmware
Hewlett-Packard plus Support and Drivers
Compaq plus Support and Drivers yes I know HP own Compaq now, but they still have their own site on HP's server.
Ad-Aware from Lavasoft
Spybot Search & Destroy
HijackThis
CWShredder
SpywareBlaster
AVG freeware anti-virus
ZoneAlarm Free not as good as the Pro but gets the job done.
Norton Anti-Virus Download Virus Definitions
McAfee Anti-Virus Updates
TrendMicro Free On-line PC Virus Scan

---

FAQ will grow as needed [PM for other FAQ type questions to add]

Q: My browser's homepage keeps changing from what I had it at before.
A: Run Ad-aware, Spybot and HijackThis. At least one of these will catch it and help you fix the problems and set things back to what they should be.

Q: There is something running on my computer and I don't know what it is.
A: Run your anti-virus (if you don't have one, get one use the AVG link above) also run the spy-ware removal tools listed in the previous question&answer.

State your currency!

If you do happen to post about an items cost, in any form. Could you please post what currency you're dealing in? To save time and grief, and to help people make wise purchases.

Some basics. Starting with American Currency, as it is most frequently used.

(Note: Conversions are not always 100% accurate, as exchange rates fluxuate daily)
$100USD = $136CND, $137AUD, £56GBP, £84EUR.

Exchange Converter

I can't think of any more off hand, but this list will be amended as needed

EDIT Jan 15, '04: added BIOS to the list of need to kow and made the list bold
EDIT Jan 22, '04 by Edwards: Corrected a few things.
EDIT Apr 22 '04 by Atomic: Added that thing by whats his face...
EDIT May 27 '04 by Atomic: Your link for HijackThis! was no longer working, I put in a correct one.
EDIT June 16 '04: Added SpywareBlaster
EDIT August 27 '04: Some small clarity edits
EDIT Dec. 9, 2004: Repleaced ADIA32 with Everest
EDIT April 26, 2005: added index as suggested by facugaich

Thank you for sharing this helpful information with us.

Yeah, it is cool, but the member got banned, or officially left?? Well, Pinned topics don't need to be locked, but a reply should have something to add, for this one in particular. As I've stated my belief is a reply should help more then just the OP, or specifics in the questioning, others just cite that as rambling, and not needed, it's personal opinion regardless, that's my stance, and to me there's justification in it as well
