Sometimes, I think that all the crazy stuff police officers go through, they deserve more "respect" than what we give them. Despite the tales of corruption, abuse, stereotyping and mishaps, they have the lovely and well paying job of enforcing the law. Luckily we have it relatively good here. What are cops like in your area?

Pretty standard in Avon & Somerset:
Quite a few good cops who go out of their way to protect and serve.
A majority who are well meaning but a bit useless.
Wankers on a power trip.
Pedants who do everything by the rule book and will arrest/fine someone for anything they can.
The odd c*nt who abuses people and may or may not get away with it.

I knew I wanted to be a cop since I was about 5 years old. I was always enamored with cops as they always seemed like heroes when I was a child. I worked hard to realize my dream and after almost 7 years, I can't see myself doing anything else. However, the job really can change a person. You never get used to seeing dead people, especially children, or going into a home and seeing a mother of 5 kids with a busted lip and two black eyes, dealing with the scum of the earth on a daily basis, etc.; it's much more than I was ever prepared for to be honest. After seeing a murdered child for the first time, I couldn't sleep for weeks. Every time I closed my eyes I would see his body, it was horrific.

I work with a lot of good officers. But for some reason people seem to think we are like some sort of different race. We are people just like everyone else! Sure, there are some horrible officers out there and I work with some of these assholes who make all of our jobs harder, but this can be said for any profession.

One of the best/most highly trained departments in the U.S is the LAPD. Even the F.B.I learn from them.

Here's a good video that'll get your blood pumping just from watching it.

The only way I would join them is if I moved to L.A, other than that, I'll most likely be one in my area.
Cops in my area are just like any in a small town.

I know I wouldn't be able to be a "Bobbie" after I saw my uncle's (who recently retired from policing after 40 years) photos from the Brixton Riots. Having to deal with that stuff just isn't my cup of tea and last year I happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and was in Tottenham during the second day of the London Riots.

So yeah, I do think that it's extremely important to respect people that daily risk their safety for ours and don't even ask for a thank-you in return. Of course the Police have suffered through some terrible times but the force of today is helpful and all they get is hate, perhaps back in the 70's/80's this was fine due to the type of stuff they did but the force of today just doesn't deserve it.

As for the Community Coppers, well, I hardly ever see 'em walking the beat around here anymore, unless they are accompanied by a proper police officer from A&SC. confused.gif And for them some are alright getting to know people who live in the community, and others are like shy puppies just walking around and hardly doing anything at all.

I think you have to be a bit of a douche or at the very least have an abrasive personality to be a "good" cop, you need to have the desire to f*ck around with people and make them bend to the almighty law's will somewhere inside of you. I'm not bad mouthing cops by the way I'm just saying I think the job requires a person of that nature, not just cops either, any position where you find yourself f*cking up people's days because of your duty is the same way. Parking authority, meter maids, bouncers, security, all of these kinds of jobs need asshole type people to do them right.

Russian Police. biggrin.gif

Throw flashbangs into the car - no chance of escape! Sometimes the police really need to get more tough, but it's just a matter of determining when it's justified. Certainly in the UK I think the police are far too restricted, as was seen in the London Riots. I respect the police though and the sh*t they put up with, especially when they can get the job done without having the resources or tactics of other police forces.

You're right. I always look for reasons to arrest people, because doing two hours worth of paperwork at the end of my tour instead of going home to my family is so much fun. What a joy it is!

A day without an arrest is a good day. If you believe that officers are actually looking to make arrests for the sake of putting people into jail for the night, you are lost. There's no doubt there are asshole cops out there, but there are also assholes working at McDonald's and at Best Buy and in every other position known to man. There's nothing more annoying than a cop who puts on his uniform and feels like he is 8ft tall and every one not in a police uniform is below them. They exist, they are out there and they are not pleasant to deal with if you're a citizen and they are not pleasant to work with, believe me. But even those assholes do not go around looking to make arrests for the sake of it.

If there not looking to make arrests why do they randomly pull over cars for stop and searches ? (At least in the UK) even though the driver is doing nothing wrong, the insurance is all dandy but just because the driver looked "suspicious" (wearign a flat cap) ?

If drugs weren't illegal I wouldn't mind police as much but they are so I generally find police a pain in the ass. There not protecting or severing anyone when they take 2 grams of weed off me after conducting a random stop search. All there doing is causing more hatred towards them. I know its the law and its there job, but when they actively look for drugs on a person its just going to cause massive disdain.

I think the police have the right to search/ask you questions if they think you: are about to commit a crime, or have commited a crime.
I think I read something like that on the NYPD site.

Here it is:

"When a police officer reasonably suspects that a person has committed, is committing or is about to commit a felony or a Penal Law misdemeanor, the officer is authorized by NYS Criminal Procedure law 140.50 to stop, question and possibly frisk that individual."

Link: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/faq/faq_police.shtml#stop

That probably applies to every area, even yours, but it may be slightly different.

I'm torn with cops. If we had more cops that didn't spray our criminals with pepper spray, or beat protesters up for really stupid reasons I think I'd be happier. But I guess nearly everyone agrees on that.

I bike home from school, and every day that I do I pass this old abandoned scrap metal salvage with a nice deck set up for the homeless, they get chairs, shade, and an umbrella for the rain. One day I saw these cops dressed up in some kind of exterior bullet-proof vest, and they had sunglasses and sh*t. I think it was a drug bust, but after that day the homeless moved a few blocks away.
