Films like Martyrs and Irreversible are two examples of French "extreme" films, and they're not really comparable to Saw or Final Destination. The latter films may be gory but they lack the emotional side of the violence which is what truly takes the French films into extreme territory. Martyrs and Irreversible in particular are gruelling experiences, both because of the extremity of the violence but also because they're psychologically draining. | I agree completely. I haven't seen Martyrs yet but Irreversible was very well put together; I think the key thing to realize with these films is that they have extreme violence but it manages to avoid being gratuitous and at the same time have a plot. Inside is my favorite NFE film. Completely bloodsoaked and well crafted
