Has anyone else seen any of these films? They're very recent, gruesome, French films but most of them have a pretty reasonable degree of intelligence. Of course some of them are normal "torture porn" trash (e.g. Baise-moi).

Thoughts?

I suppose both torture porn and "new French extremity" aren't really new by some standards, I believe the earliest NFE films were from the late 90s.

I wonder if we'll see any name changing as this beloved genre ages.

Films like Martyrs and Irreversible are two examples of French "extreme" films, and they're not really comparable to Saw or Final Destination. The latter films may be gory but they lack the emotional side of the violence which is what truly takes the French films into extreme territory. Martyrs and Irreversible in particular are gruelling experiences, both because of the extremity of the violence but also because they're psychologically draining.

I agree completely. I haven't seen Martyrs yet but Irreversible was very well put together; I think the key thing to realize with these films is that they have extreme violence but it manages to avoid being gratuitous and at the same time have a plot.

Inside is my favorite NFE film. Completely bloodsoaked and well crafted

Yeah, I love Switchblade Romance and recently I watched Inside which actually shocked me. I think I'm just getting more squeamish as I get older.
